How consistent irrigation choices drive crop uniformity

Introduction

A grower walks through the crop and immediately sees how it develops, if it's in a vegetive state or if it will be ready at a certain time.  Sections that move faster or slower. Differences in pace, color or strength stand out quickly. This first look gives direction because it reflects how earlier decisions are showing up in the plant today. 

Consistent irrigation as the foundation for a uniform crop 

One of the drivers for a uniform crop is accurate and consistent with fertigation. Growers work with targets for volume, EC, and timing. In daily practice, those targets are adjusted based on conditions and experience. What matters for the crop is not a single adjustment, but whether those decisions follow the same reference day after day. 

In many greenhouses, fertigation starts based on settings such as a timer. You have set targets to follow, and consistency is key. When adjustments are made and get out of context, decisions begin to stand on their own instead a fertigation strategy 

Over time, this shows up as a variation in crop development, which reduces predictability in growth.

What Manuel sees in practice 

Manuel Madani, Key Account Manager at Priva, connects with growers across Southeast Asia in tropical conditions. In these regions, precision in fertigation directly affects the crop’s fertigation requirements and growth. Nutrients and water management the primary steering tool for my region. 

Many growers move to hydroponic or substrate systems, after precision irrigation, to gain more control over root conditions. The best field practices are those guided by light levels or expected plant transpiration. These growers measure substrate moisture, drain volume, EC and pH to identify the right transpiration.

Water quality

Water quality is not a side topic. It is the foundation of every fertigation strategy. 

In many regions, clean and sufficient water is becoming less predictable. If you reuse drain water or work with groundwater, salts can build up over time. That directly affects how your nutrient recipe performs. What you calculate on paper is not always what reaches the roots. 

Excess salts or unwanted elements can disturb nutrient uptake, shorten the lifetime of system components, and increase tdisease risk. Small deviations can quietly build up into larger problems. 

When water quality and supply are under control, your recipes behave as expected. Your targets stay meaningful. And your system works with you instead of against you.

Growers are not looking for rigid systems or fixed recipes.  They want to tune their irrigation to the constantly changing need of the plants. One that supports experience, while keeping decisions aligned over time.

Optional extra insight with sensors

Some growers add sensors to gain additional insight. All sensors can be connected to Priva Compass and used as part of your irrigation strategy. 

You can measure light, temperature, humidity, substrate moisture, and other plant-level conditions. Light and substrate measurements are often a good starting point. These values can be used as feedback in your irrigation control, either wireless through Aranet sensors or via wired sensors already connected to your system.

A practical example: measuring plant stress instead of guessing 

At Bark Hut Berries in Coffs Harbour, Australia, the grower wanted more clarity on how the crop responded to rapidly changing coastal conditions. Air temperature and humidity were available, but they did not always reflect what the plant actually experienced during sudden weather shifts. 

By combining sensors with a wireless infrared leaf temperature senso, the team added VPD (Vapour Pressure Deficit) as an extra reference inside Priva Compass. VPD describes how easily a plant can release water through its leaves and helps indicate when the plant moves away from its intended balance. 

Instead of waiting for visible differences in growth or balance, the grower could now see shifts in plant stress earlier in the day. Irrigation timing and climate settings were adjusted while the crop was still stable, not after imbalance became visible. 

As Cheyne Clarke, owner of Bark Hut Berries, explains: 
“It allows me to see stress immediately and adjust before the plant shows it.” 

For this grower, the value was not more data. It was a clearer reference that supported consistent daily decisions. And that reference helped keep irrigation and climate adjustments aligned with the overall crop strategy. 

From routine to confidence

When fertigation targets are used as a reference, daily decisions move in the same direction. Variation decreases and crop development becomes more uniform.
