From industrial ruin to smart building: the technical revolution behind the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk

The Bergson Art Power Plant in Munich is more than just a cultural centre – it is an outstanding example of the successful transformation of a historic industrial building using the latest building technology.

The challenge was to transform a listed industrial building – planned in the 1920s – into a state-of-the-art, multifunctional cultural centre whilst maintaining its original character.

Technical challenges of modernization

The transformation of the former Aubing heating and power plant required a complex technical solution. A wide variety of rooms on nine different levels had to be air-conditioned – from the 23-meter-high atrium to a concert hall, art galleries and catering areas. The task of preserving the historical building fabric while implementing state-of-the-art building technology was particularly demanding.

Innovative climate control solution

With support from Priva employees, IVM Gebäudetechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Ebersberg, developed the automation concept for the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk on behalf of the client, Allguth. IVM Gebäudetechnik used customized climate control solutions that met the special requirements of the building. In the atrium, for example, ventilation systems were installed that can be precisely regulated by means of servomotors. The ventilation units on the roof have a capacity of 25,000 cubic meters and were designed to minimize operating noise.

Priva technology as the key to optimization

Karl-Heinz Mayer, managing director of IVM Gebäudetechnik, emphasizes the advantages of the Priva systems for the tasks around the Bergson power plant:

A major advantage of Priva systems is their balanced complexity: the solutions are powerful enough to handle even demanding control tasks, but remain manageable and time-efficient in terms of implementation. The intuitive operability makes the systems particularly practical and ‘user friendly’. In addition, the receptiveness, to other brands is convincing, for example with regard to the hardware in the field of sensor technology, which enables the flexible integration of various components.

Technical highlights of the implementation

On behalf of the client, IVM Gebäudetechnik commissioned Priva partner company Trane Roggenkamp – a refrigeration/air conditioning specialist and control cabinet construction expert – to implement the automation solution. Around 70 robust Priva S-Line controllers were installed for control operations. These are responsible for the precise control of underfloor heating, heating circuit distributors and other building functions. A 21-inch touch panel in the heating center and additional wall displays enable direct control on site. Priva's cloud-based automation service, Priva Digital Services (LINK), also allows location-independent operation via smartphone or tablet.

Future prospects: digital twin

In the next phase of the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk s expansion, Priva ecoBuilding is planned to be used to activate a self-optimizing control system. The goal is to continuously improve the operation of the air conditioning technology in terms of effectiveness and resource efficiency. Success and significance Since its opening in April 2024, thousands of people have already visited this extraordinary cultural venue. The Bergson Kunstkraftwerk impressively demonstrates how digital building technology can combine historical structures with the most modern functionality – while simultaneously harmonizing sustainability, efficiency and user comfort.
