Building control specialists Priva UK Ltd, and Electrical and Mechanical Controls Ltd (EMC) have scooped a coveted Electrical Industry Award for an innovative building management system (BMS) upgrade at Westminster Abbey.

The Electrical Industry Awards - which were held at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington on 27th October 2016 - brought together manufacturers, contractors and suppliers in a celebration of the best projects and technologies in the electrical industry.

Priva and EMC received an overwhelming vote in their favour in the Project of the Year category, for an extensive BMS upgrade project at Westminster Abbey. Using Priva Blue ID, the new BMS has replaced an outdated system, bringing the building's heating and ventilation function into the 21st century.

Key to the project was avoiding disturbance to the fabric of one of the country's most historically important buildings while significantly minimising install costs. Priva 2-wire technology meant that the existing twisted pair communication network cable could be used for IP communications, without needing to install a new network infrastructure from scratch. The Priva Blue ID system enabled existing temperature sensors and cabling to field devices to be re-used, saving the abbey a 'small fortune' and preserving the fabric of the 900 year old building.

As a result of the project, temperature control within the abbey is far more efficient, while the extensive and laborious checks required with the previous BMS are confined to the history books. Some jobs have been reduced from hours, to just seconds.

Anders Norén, Managing Director of Priva UK comments: "We are thrilled to win such a prestigious award in partnership with EMC. Priva Blue ID is becoming the BMS technology of choice for historic buildings across Europe. We are proud to see it delivering operational and cost benefits to one of London's most iconic buildings."
