"We want to help customers get the best from their building(s) in an intuitive and as easy a manner as possible," says Product Manager Leo Hitzert of Priva, explaining the thinking behind the introduction of this next generation intelligent building control system. As the Product Manager, Hitzert has been intensively involved from the start in the development of Blue ID. "The starting point for the development of Blue ID was an international market research survey that we commissioned into the needs of building managers, users and contractors."
"We held around 100 interviews in total with end users and Priva Partners in various countries. These interviews gave us a good idea of what aspects users, building managers and contractors would like to see appear in a next generation building control system. Reliability, freedom of choice, user-friendliness and flexibility of the operating concept really jumped out at us," says Hitzert, summarising the main conclusions of the survey.
Shortage of specialists
One important observation that all the stakeholders pointed out is that there is a growing shortage of domain-trained specialists. "The supply of well trained measurement and control technicians is under considerable pressure.
Given the current numbers of students going into technical education, this situation will only get worse over the coming years," according to Hitzert. "In the development of Blue ID and Top Control 8, we therefore included as much domain-specific knowledge as possible in the product itself."
Available at any time and from any place
The international market research also made it clear that there was a significant need for a fully web-based system. Hitzert: "This was also a guiding principle for us in the development of Blue ID. Opting for this technology means that both end users and contractors can access and operate Blue ID remotely over the Internet from any PC they wish."
Maximum freedom of choice
Blue ID also offers maximum flexibility on another front. Freedom of choice is highly valued by companies that use a building control system. In that respect, Hitzert believes that Blue ID and Top Control 8 are a perfect fit for these users' wishes. "End users own the software and can always access the latest version of the project database, which is located on the controller. This means that they are free to choose to whom they wish to outsource the maintenance and servicing of their system(s)." Thanks to the integration of the BACnet protocol in the controller, it is possible to combine Blue ID with other BACnet-based management and control systems. "System owners therefore have complete freedom to decide with which other systems they need to work."
The naming of Priva's next generation building control system is also reflected in the distinctive front view of the Blue ID hardware. "On the front of every Blue ID component there is an illuminated blue line with an illuminated blue Priva logo in the centre. We call this the Lifeline. If this Lifeline is continuously illuminated, this means that the system is working without any problems. If there is a failure within a specific module, the blue Lifeline of the module in question will start flashing. This allows the user or service engineer to see at a glance which module needs to be checked."
According to Hitzert, the selection of a blue illuminated line was obvious. "Priva has been inseparably associated with the colour blue for many years. Blue ID also excels in that respect. Apart from the fact that Blue ID helps companies to minimise their energy consumption, sustainability played an important role in the selection of the materials used. In addition, production and assembly take place in the Netherlands. As well as being a guarantee of the highest level of quality, this also saves on a lot of transportation miles."
Chief Operating Officer Reinder Prins of Priva has high expectations for the introduction of Priva Blue ID. "The initial reactions from our partners have been very enthusiastic. They see many of their needs reflected in the overall concept, especially in terms of speed and ease. Our partners and end users need to be able to count absolutely on Priva as a manufacturer of top-quality products. With the introduction of Blue ID, we are reinforcing our reputation as a leading player in the building control market. In particular, its ease of operation really stands out. It is no accident that we call it 'Building control by intuition'."
